Our Serendipitous Adventure

Roger and I dancing our hearts out in Murphy, North Carolina a friend's wedding.

From Wedding Guests to Mountain Property Managers

In September of 2022, my husband Roger and I embarked on what we thought would be a simple, delightful trip to Murphy, North Carolina. Little did we know, this trip would turn into an unexpected adventure that would leave us with lifelong memories and a new chapter in our lives.

Our journey began with a drive through the winding roads of the Five Forks neighborhood, leading us to our Airbnb for the weekend—a charming cabin called Misty Mountain. Nestled on the top of a mountain, the cabin boasted breathtaking views, a cozy fireplace, a fire pit for evening gatherings, two spacious living rooms, and a hot tub that promised relaxation under the stars. However, our initial excitement was tempered by a rocky start. The cabin wasn’t quite ready when we arrived, leading to a few moments of frustration and uncertainty. But, as life often does, things have a way of working out. We soon settled into our temporary mountain home, appreciating its rustic charm and the stunning scenery that surrounded us.

The main event of our trip was a friend's wedding in Brasstown, a quaint town not far from Murphy. The wedding was nothing short of magical. Held at a picturesque venue with rolling hills as the backdrop, it was the perfect setting for our friends to say their vows. The highlight of the rehearsal dinner was the delicious jambalaya prepared by my husband—a delightful dish that warmed our hearts and filled our stomachs.

The wedding day was a smash hit. Everything from the ceremony to the reception went off without a hitch, and we danced the night away under a canopy of twinkling lights. We made new friends and reconnected with old ones, all while celebrating the love and happiness of our dear friends.

Back at Misty Mountain, we found ourselves increasingly enchanted by mountain life. We quickly became friends with our neighbors, sharing stories, drinks, and laughter around the fire pit. The sense of community and the serene beauty of the mountains made it a truly special place.

As our stay came to an end, a surprising opportunity presented itself. The owner of Misty Mountain, impressed by our enthusiasm and love for the cabin, offered us the chance to manage the property. We jumped at the opportunity, excited about the prospect of returning to this beautiful place and helping others enjoy it as much as we did.

Later that same year, our adventure in property management expanded when we picked up another wonderful house just down the street called The Great Escape. This home, with its three bedrooms, three baths, fire pit, screened-in deck, gorgeous views, hot tub, two living rooms, and a wet bar, was just as charming and inviting as Misty Mountain. We were thrilled to have another beautiful property to share with visitors, each bringing its own unique charm to our growing portfolio.

Murphy, North Carolina, is more than just beautiful mountain views and cozy cabins. The town itself is filled with delightful dining options, charming shops, and friendly locals. During our stay, we discovered several favorite spots that made our experience even more enjoyable. For dining, ShoeBooties Cafe in downtown Murphy offers a cozy atmosphere and a menu filled with Southern comfort food—their shrimp and grits are a must-try, and the friendly service makes every visit a pleasure. For a more upscale dining experience, Murphy’s Chophouse is the place to go, with perfectly cooked steaks, fresh seafood, and an extensive wine list, making it ideal for a special night out. If you’re in the mood for a delicious sandwich or a hearty bowl of soup, Red Brick Deli is the spot, with welcoming staff and a laid-back vibe that makes it perfect for a casual lunch.

When it comes to local watering holes, Chevelles 66 stands out as a favorite among locals and visitors alike. This lively bar and grill features live music, great food, and a wide selection of beers, making it the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring. Another gem is Valley River Brewery, which offers a fantastic selection of craft beers brewed on-site and a menu featuring delicious pizzas and pub fare. The relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff make it a great spot to relax with friends or family.

For those looking for a bit of excitement, Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino is just a short drive from Murphy. The casino offers a range of gaming options, from slot machines to table games, and is a great place to try your luck. Even if gambling isn’t your thing, the casino features several restaurants and live entertainment, making it a fun outing for everyone.

Our trip to Murphy, North Carolina, turned out to be so much more than we had anticipated. What began as a weekend getaway for a friend’s wedding evolved into an unexpected adventure, leading us to new friendships, opportunities, and experiences. Managing Misty Mountain and The Great Escape has been a rewarding journey, allowing us to share the beauty and tranquility of the mountains with others.

We’ve come to love Murphy, with its stunning landscapes, charming downtown, and welcoming community. It’s a place where memories are made, and every visit offers something new to discover. Whether you’re planning a special event, looking for a relaxing retreat, or just passing through, Murphy, North Carolina, is a destination that captures the heart and leaves you longing to return.

As I sit here, reflecting on our journey, I can’t help but smile at the twists and turns that led us to this point. From a rocky start at our Airbnb to managing two beautiful mountain homes, our time in Murphy has been nothing short of serendipitous. We’ve embraced the unexpected, forged lasting connections, and found a place that feels like a second home.

If you ever find yourself in need of a mountain escape, I wholeheartedly recommend visiting Murphy. And if you’re looking for a cozy cabin with stunning views, we’d be delighted to welcome you to Misty Mountain or The Great Escape. Our adventure in Murphy continues, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds in this enchanting corner of North Carolina.
